Reyes Peak

Map     Satellite

Reyes Peak, the summit of the Pine Mountain Range, supports a diversity of trees illustrative of those of the range.  At the higher elevations is a yellow pine forest with the sugar pine, Pinus lambertiana, dominant.  The white fir, Abies concolor, is also present.  Along the crest is a linear colony of the yellow pine, Pinus ponderosa.  Below 1,825 meters (6,000 feet) the big-cone Douglas fir, Pseudotsuga macrocarpa, is prevalent.  This tree is particularly common on the north slopes of Pine Mountain.  There is also a pinyon woodland with the single-leaved pinyon, Pinus monophylla, dominant.

The sharp ridge of Pine Mountain rises from east and west to meet at the angular summit of Reyes Peak.  The mantle of pines is almost complete except for patches of bare substrate down from the ridge, especially on the southern slope.

The rare and endangered California condor, Gymnogyps californianus, is frequently sighted in the area.

Integrity:  There is a dirt road in the area.

Use:  Research, educational, observational, light recreational.
