| Ventura River Mouth MAP Satellite At the mouth of the Ventura River is a small wetland with adjacent sand dunes. The vegetation in the area is primarily a thicket of willow, Salix hindsiana and Salix lasiolepis; however, there is a small salt marsh and some highly disturbed coastal sage association. The vegetation of the salt marsh is typical. While the animal population is not great, there are several species of interest. A number of birds will be found here, including the endangered Belding's savannah sparrow, Passerculus sandwichensis beldingi. There is also a colony of an uncommon species of the wandering skipper family Hesperiidae. The area is in the flood plain of the river and is Quaternary alluvium. Integrity: Though the area is highly impacted by human use, including debris, and is crossed by a railroad, the presence of sparrow warrants it's inclusion here. Use: Research, educational, observational. December 1976
