Shrubs or trees, 7–33' (2–10 m).
6–100 stems, branched near base, erect to outwardly arching, leafless most of the year.
Flowers bright red, attracting insects and birds.
Blooming March–July.
Dry, generally rocky soils.
Elevation < 2300' (700 m).
Sonoran Desert.
