Perennial, stems mostly underground 1–8" (3–20 cm).
Flowers yellowish, tinged red or tipped purple.
Blooming May–June.
Dry ridgetops, coniferous woodlands, often with red fir.
Elevation 4900–11500' (1500–3500 m).
Northwestern California, Cascade Ranges, Sierra Nevada, Southwestern California.
