Shrub, 20–39" (5–10 dm).
Plant ± rounded; lateral stems nearly perpendicular to upright stems, tips becoming spine-like.
Flowers two-colored, with a velvety dark purple upper lip, and a whitish lower lip.
Blooming March–June.
Sandy to gravelly slopes, dry washes and canyons.
Elevation < 5900' (1800 m).
Great Basin Province (east of Sierra Nevada), Desert Province.
